RESTAURANT SUMMARY

Steve Deal:"When on vacation or visiting an area for the first time, I try to find restaurants that are authentic to the destination. I would gladly recommend any of the following establishments to visitors of our beautiful destination. The Daytona Beach area is home to many wonderful restaurants; some are local and some are chains. I haven't had the pleasure of trying them all, but of those I have visited, the following are my personal favorites. I have included specifications on the availability of handicap parking, the difficulty or ease of maneuvering within the restaurant in a wheelchair, a booth to table ratio as those who use wheelchairs typically prefer table seating, the accessibility and size of the restroom accommodations and the overall accessibility of the establishment. Each of these restaurants provided a high level of service in making me feel comfortable and welcome."

Steve Deal: "Roomy inside and sidewalk seating outside.  Very casual & affordable. Delicious seafood with huge portions.

For this restaurant review, I decided to go to the Oyster Pub with my colleague, Lori. I've been going there for over 25 years, so I thought I would give it a shot. I also had heard they remodeled, so I was curious to see what it now looks like.

You could tell the difference just by driving up. There are now several outdoor tables and televisions, and everything looks very classy, with stone siding and nice pavers. This area was probably added for smokers, but it's very accessible and airy enough to not drastically annoy non-smokers.

We headed inside and I honestly could hardly believe the changes. Everything is brand-new and beautiful. The Oyster Pub is a sports bar and has 40 screens spread across every conceivable corner of the restaurant/bar. Even the bathrooms have televisions in them. Speaking of bathrooms… we both arrived before they opened, but they let us in anyway. We figured that would be a good time to check out the bathrooms.

The bathrooms are large with two stalls, one handicapped and one not. The handicapped stall is not very large. It has a railing and a low seat, but I don't think all chairs can turn around in there. There are three sinks with plenty of space underneath them for the legs of a wheelchair. There are also hand dryers that are like tiny tornadoes in a little box. Your hands will be dry in no time flat. It's made by Dyson, who also makes the high-quality vacuum cleaner. Another nice feature about the bathrooms here is the automatic-flush feature. After you move away from the toilet, it flushes.

We saw several booths, and it would be easy for a wheelchair to fit at the end of a booth. Most of the aisles are very wide which makes it easy to get around. Plus, each booth has its own TV. Whether it's summer baseball or winter football, I like having a private TV in my booth.

There are also 30+ low tables that are mostly accessible.  I've never had a problem finding an accessible table, even during the NFL playoffs. The Oyster Pub also has its own "Steelers" room and a game room with pool, video games, pinball, and more.

We finally ordered our food. I had fish tacos and clam chowder, and Lori had chicken wings. Seriously, everything was great! I've been there before, and I know how good the rest of their food is. They have great hamburgers and the best french fries I've ever had in my entire life. I know that's a bold statement, but it's true. And you have to try their delicious seafood, steaks, and appetizers. Did I forget to mention the oysters? They'll cook them how you want them. For me, extra steamed with butter, crackers, and hot sauce.

There are a couple of handicapped parking spots in the lot just north of Oyster Pub, and several others along the road and across the street. During the busy season, they sometimes charge a parking fee.

Again, I definitely recommend this classy establishment. It's very accessible, and it's a local landmark in Daytona Beach. Be sure to buy a T-shirt when you go!

Steve Deal:"Delicious and authentic food. Staff is very attentive.  Spacious seating and easy to navigate through.  Front door ramp access.  Reasonable, quick, and delicious."

While looking for a new restaurant in the Beach Street area of Daytona Beach, someone mentioned Tia Cori's Tacos. I had heard it was pretty good, so I called my friend Lori and off we went. We got there around 11 a.m. to make sure we got a good seat.

Going through the front door, I first noticed how clean everything was. Good sign. And then I noticed the delicious aromas coming from the kitchen! Mexican is already my favorite type of food, so I was getting hungry quickly. At Tia Cori's, you go to the counter and order, they give you your drink, and then they bring your food out to your table. We had hardly gotten situated when our food came. That is okay with me because I like not having to wait for lunch.

We ordered Mexican beef tacos, a beef tostada, ceviche and guacamole. We learned that Mexican tacos are just meat, onions, cilantro, and lime, whereas American tacos have lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream. I was looking for something new and different, so I tried the Mexican tacos. They were so delicious (and healthier!) If you're not sure, try one Mexican style and get the others American style. They'll do that. We were just as equally impressed with the tostada and ceviche. The beef on the tostada was surprisingly different, but still delicious. And the ceviche (raw fish, marinated in lime juice until cooked) was fresh and tasty. Also, the guacamole is the best in town.

There are several other items to choose from on the menu including chips and salsa, flautas, quesadillas, burritos, tortas, tamales, chile rellenos, rice and beans, and some tasty looking desserts. To drink, they offer soft drinks, bottled water, and beer and wine.

There were always attentive employees walking around checking on us, and they provided refills for my drink. Very nice. The closer we got to 12 noon, the faster Tia Cori's started filling up. I'm glad we got there early.

The dining room at Tia Cori's is very roomy, and there are several places for a wheelchair to park. There is additional seating for the ambulatory upstairs on a loft. Good use of space!  The bathrooms are clean, but pretty small. Some chairs might not be able to turn around in there. There are a couple of handicap parking spots close to Tia Cori's.

Tia Cori's Tacos is conveniently located just north of the Arena and the Coliseum and just across the street from the News-Journal Center.

You're going to love it!

Handicap Parking: Handicap parking is close to front door
Maneuverability: Easy to navigate through the restaurant
Booth to Table ratio: Very good

Steve Deal: "Lots to see, and lots to eat. The place is beautiful and the food is delicious. There are many different room decor options while you eat. In addition to several fancy dishes, they have shrimp and grits… A Florida favorite!"

A new addition to the area, Vince Carter's is named after the owner/NBA superstar, Vince Carter's is a beautiful, upscale restaurant unlike any other in the area.

Vince Carter's is located on LPGA Boulevard just on the northeast side of I-95. Being in a wheelchair, I took the bus there. The bus stop is only a few hundred yards away from the restaurant, and there is an access road with a nice sidewalk connecting the bus stop and the restaurant. One thing to remember when taking the bus to the restaurant is that only two buses go by there. The 18 will drop you off on the east side of the road, and you'll have to cross over two potentially busy lanes to get on the sidewalk. However, if you take the 19, you will be dropped off on the west side of the road where you won't have to cross any lanes.

The entrance to Vince Carter's is on the west side of the building closest to the highway, and I noticed many handicapped parking spots near the front door in addition to gently sloped ramps for easy access to the building. When I was there, the host was right there inside to open the door for me. Maybe I got lucky, but there always seemed to be someone at the front. Good for them. They kindly held the door for me and got me a table immediately.

I got there early for lunch, just after 11 a.m., so I asked for a quick tour before being seated. Immediately past the host station on the right is the piano room. This is a quaint, private little bar/dining area that may hold 15-20 people or so. On some evenings, a piano player is in there playing away; I would really like to try that one night. Opposite the piano room is the sports bar area. This is a big room! There is a bar, several tables, and countless over-sized television screens high on the wall showing probably any sport that can be shown at a particular moment. There is even a sports ticker showing current scores from around the sports world. A door in the back leads to an outdoor smoking patio. I didn't attempt going out there, but it seems possible.

Next I went to the main dining room, and there are plenty of spots for me to feel perfectly comfortable and not in the way of anyone else. Some restaurants have no such spots at all. Being one of the first there, I had my pick. It was near a wall of windows that that overlook a long outdoor patio and a pond with a fountain. The floor is carpeted, but easy to ride on, and everything is beautiful and elegant. I was getting hungry!

My lunch companion, Lori, showed up and we both looked over the menu. My choices included: crab cakes, dips, poppers, wings, salads, soups, herb wraps, steak, burgers, seafood, pork chops, chicken, flat bread pizza, and several types of pasta. Everything looked great, but I settled on a salad followed by crab meat covered snapper, and Lori got the Caesar salad with grilled scallops. We traded bites and I cannot tell you which was better! They were both simply excellent. I can imagine anything else on the menu being just as good. Thinking we would split the desert , Lori tricked me into ordering the Neapolitan Mousse. It was just as great as the meal, and I'm glad she didn't want any. In addition to good food, our server was quick and attentive. By the way, the iced tea and coffee were both perfect, and I'm very particular when it comes to these two beverages. Very important!

Before I left, I checked out the bathroom. Even though there are two doors that needed to be opened for me, it is about as good as you can get. It is large enough to easily maneuver in, and the stall also has ample room. The stall has a lowered toilet, grab-bars, and its own sink. Both sinks are lowered, with set-aside plumbing for more legroom. And for you daddies out there, there is a diaper-changing table. Hooray!

I highly recommend Vince Carter's to anyone in, or not in a wheelchair.
It's very accessible and delicious. Enjoy!
