Daytona Beach Official Visitors Guide - page 53

West Volusia is just west of the
Daytona Beach area and includes the
communities of DeLand, Deltona,
Orange City, DeLeon Springs,
Barberville, Cassadaga, Lake Helen,
Seville, Pierson, Volusia, Glenwood,
DeBary and Enterprise.
Charming shops, boutiques, sidewalk
cafes and museums thrive in the college
town of downtown DeLand.
Parachutists from all over the world
— and those who get thrill enough from
watching them from an observation
deck — are drawn to Skydive DeLand on
the outskirts of town.
Nearby, three state parks, a national
wildlife refuge and the St. Johns River
— designated an American Heritage
River — offer endless outdoor activities
and amazing encounters with nature.
During winter cold snaps, visitors
to Blue Spring State Park are almost
certain to see manatees that have been
attracted to the relatively warmwater
in the run.

West Volusia:
small town charm, encounters with nature
Visitors to the New Smyrna Beach
area enjoy the relaxing sands and
sights of charming Old Florida. Just
a short drive south of the Daytona
Beach area, this destination includes
New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange,
Edgewater, Oak Hill and Osteen,
offering historic sites, art galleries,
shops and beautiful waterfront
dining.
The area’s pristine beaches are a
popular stopping place for families
with small children — and in select
areas even playful dogs. One of the
most popular surf breaks on the east
coast of Florida is there, along with
dozens of surf shops offering rentals
and lessons.
Just south of New Smyrna lies the
Canaveral National Seashore, which
offers excellent swimming, bird
watching, hiking and more. Anglers
at nearby Mosquito Lagoon have
set international records with giant
redfish catches. Deep-sea charters
leave New Smyrna Beach daily, giving
offshore fishers an easy way to wet a
line in the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.
Named one of the “100 Best Small
Art Towns in America,” New Smyrna
is home to the Atlantic Center for
the Arts, an artists-in-residence
community and educational facility.
Flagler Avenue and Canal Street,
which were recently renovated,
feature shops and cafes.
